Then scrape off the remaining putty and then wash the carpet.

Scrape the loose putty off the carpet and then apply a remover of your choice.
Use this to cover the area that the silly putty stain is on.
Get a cup of warm water and put in two spoonful s of washing detergent make sure it is not filled with bleach or other nasty chemicals that are going to do more damage to the carpet than the silly putty.
The vinegar will work to dissolve the slime so that you can wipe it off the carpet.
Leave the detergent on the carpet for 30 minutes to soak so as to leave the putty behind.
Blot the carpet stain and any remaining silly putt.
You can then use a soft cloth or sponge to massage the area where the wd 40 has been applied working to remove the stain.
